CERATH Embarks on a COVID-19 Sensitization Exercise & Relief Donation to Fishing Communities.

The Power to the Fishers project funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by CERATH Development Organization (CDO) carried out COVID-19 sensitization exercises in five coastal districts- Awutu Senya, Effutu, Gomoa West, Ekumfi, and Shama districts.

In response to the outbreak of the pandemic and its implications on coastal communities, CDO educated fisherfolks on the novel coronavirus, its mode of transmission, symptoms, preventive measures, and prescribed means of seeking medical attention. This provided the opportunity to discuss and debunk  myths about COVID-19. Demonstrations were also made on the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), handwashing with soap under running water, and the application of alcohol-based sanitizers. These engagements were aimed at safeguarding the health and safety of project beneficiaries and target communities.

In addition to the sensitization exercise, relief items including bags of rice, and personal protective equipment (PPEs) such as nose masks, handwash stations, and hand sanitizers, were donated to the communities. The beneficiary communities were very thankful to the EU for funding and supporting this humanitarian intervention.

The Power to the Fishers project is focused on enhancing the socio-economic livelihoods of fishing communities within selected districts of the coastal savannah zones of Ghana. Activities under this project are targeted at technology transfer of improved fish smoking technologies, capacity building on environmental protection and climate resilience, and facilitating access to social protection services amongst fisherfolks.
