LFGP Empowers 81 Fisherfolk in Sinoe County with Alternative Livelihood Skills

stories

In January 2026, the Liberia Fisheries Governance Project (LFGP) successfully trained a total of 81 fisherfolk across Sinoe County’s four fishing districts in alternative livelihood skills. This milestone builds on earlier efforts, including the training of nine fisherfolk in May 2025 and an additional 72 participants in recent sessions.

The program focused on practical skills such as baking, tie-and-dye, and soap making, identified through a county-wide assessment of high-demand products and services. By equipping fisherfolk with these complementary skills, LFGP aims to expand income opportunities and strengthen community participation in the coastal economy.

To demonstrate knowledge transfer, trainees showcased their newly acquired abilities by baking assorted breads and cakes, producing vibrant tie-and-dye garments, and manufacturing various soaps. Trainers assessed the outputs to confirm skill mastery.

Looking ahead, LFGP will provide start-up kits to beneficiaries, enabling them to commercialize their products and smoothly transition into new income-generating ventures. This initiative not only diversifies livelihoods but also reinforces resilience within fishing communities.
