CERATH Development Organization has planted 10,000 trees in East Mamprusi Municipality as part of its agroforestry and restoration activities under the Integrated Resilient Savannah Agroforestry (IRESAG) Project.
The project is one of 100 top projects selected and funded by TerraFund for AFR100. The latter is a consortium organized by World Resources Institute, One Tree Planted, and Realize Impact in support of an effort to bring 100 million hectares of land in Africa into restoration by 2030.
The 10,000 trees planted comprised cashew, neem, moringa, and acacia species, specifically chosen by the communities to provide livelihood opportunities for farmers and women. The beneficiary communities for the tree planting exercise are Langbisi, Timpeli, Bongbini, and Buzulugu, all in the East Mamprusi Municipality. The project also partnered with Langbisi Senior High School to improve on environmental education among the students and involve them in tree planting. The tree planting exercise involved Forest Services Division in Gambaga, community members; women, men, students and the elderly.
The IRESAG project seeks to restore 50 hectares within six communities spread across the East and West Mamprusi Municipalities by the end of 2023. So far, the IRESAG project has restored over 12 hectares of degraded areas. The tree planting exercise forms part of agroforestry and restoration activities that will help in achieving the project goal of enhancing ecological functions and agricultural productivity in the East and West Mamprusi Municipalities in Ghana through community-driven #afforestation and #conservation approaches.
